CRUCIAL ROLE FOR ENIAC

The crucial role of ENIAC was “to make the 2020 information society technologically feasible and economically affordable”. Meeting this objective and maintaining Europe’s current pre-eminence in nanoelectronics depends upon following the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) drawn up by ENIAC in 2005, and updated in 2007.

This strategic research agenda with its 2020 horizon establishes priorities, seeks to avoid duplication and encourages a critical mass of coherent effort. It also calls for stronger co-ordination of the work plans of the EU Framework Programmes, the pan-European EUREKA MEDEA+ Cluster and national initiatives. And it depends on the availability of a well-trained multidisciplinary workforce.

Key actions include:

  • Demonstrating a common vision to increase EU, national and private R&D funding for R&D and infrastructure initiatives, and improve the effectiveness of these investments;
  • Accelerating the generation of new knowledge and innovation, speeding the uptake of research and technologies, and improving competitiveness and productivity;
  • Removing obstacles at EU, national and regional levels for co-ordination and to facilitate/accelerate market penetration of new technologies;
  • Maintaining a balance between scientific curiosity-driven and application-oriented research while helping align R&D with European policies and regulatory frameworks;
  • Making Europe more attractive for researchers and industrial investment; and
  • Increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of the technologies concerned and the research policy choices necessary to maximise the benefits for all.

AENEAS is now responsible for updating the Strategic Research Agenda.
